The lime production process has been known for thousands of years, in fact, the oldest discovery is a lime flooring found in Israel which dates back to 7000 b.C. The most remote examples of lime mixtures, dating back to the 7th and the 6th millennium b.C., were mainly found in the Middle East, places where researchers believe that the development of knowledge on binders took place. In Europe, the studies on the sacred temple of Monte D’Accoddi, located in northern Sardinia and dating back to the 3rd millennium b.C,, have demonstrated the use of raw lime mortars created by compacting calcite particles, obtained from "albino" neogenic limestone deposits, mixed with water (R. Vecchiattini 2009). Such discovery shows that lime has long been used in Sardinia, and this is confirmed by the numerous lime kilns, found in the island.
